Here’s the official description of our home:
Cornerstone Children’s Home is located in Nimule, South Sudan. The home was started by Fulaa Lifeline International, a non-profit organization that supports Sudanese immigrants in the United States and spearheads humanitarian projects in Sudan and in a refugee camp in Northern Uganda. Cornerstone now provides a safe haven for 42 children who have been orphaned, abandoned, severely neglected or abused. Some of the kids at Cornerstone were orphaned during Sudan’s civil war, while others lost their parents in ruthless attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army, a Ugandan rebel group. Several of the children watched their mothers and fathers waste away — victims of the many diseases that plague Sudan. A handful of the kids still have at least one living parent, but were discarded, ignored, or physically abused by the very persons whom they needed most. Every child has a story, and every story is swollen with grief.
But now the Cornerstone Kids don’t tell stories that end in despair, but stories that are filled with immeasurable hope and stories that have yet to reach their conclusions. The boys and girls who reside at Cornerstone are given all the necessities: food, shelter, clothing, education, medicine, spiritual guidance, and love. Every day of every week the kids are receiving the kind of care that will help them grow into well-rounded, generous, and active adults. On the weekends, the same care is offered to 19 children from the surrounding community. All together there are 61 children who currently receive assistance from Cornerstone. In the future Cornerstone will be able to shelter at least 100 children. A large modern home is under construction near the huts where the children presently reside. If financial support continues to be offered for the construction then the new home should be completed by the summer of 2008. The Cornerstone Staff and the Nimule community anxiously look forward to the day when the nineteen weekend children (along with several children who are yet to be selected) will live and flourish along with the kids who are already fully a part of the ever growing Cornerstone Family.
